When doing just for fun the Aria of Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, often sung already by Carmen Duran, first at the International Spring Music Festival (Heidelberger Frühling) with the original orchestral accompaniment (8 Cellos of the Philharmonisches Orchester Heidelberg), then on other occasions and in many recitals with piano and guitar accompaniment, we immediately realized that we should concentrate on the work of Villa-Lobos preparing a full program – as an artistic challenge to pay tribute to this unique figure of Brazilian music.
From work to work and experiment to experiment we ended up choosing a set of 6 Villa-Lobos Originals, masterfully arranged by Alberto Conde, adding to it 4 pieces of his own, with lyrics written especially for this project by the author of these lines.
Maybe should be emphasized that the composition method of Villa-Lobos and his personal creative concept seem to invite us to seek all sorts of possibilities his great inventions and harmonic proposals give us in order to revitalize his work or at least certain facets of it – surely dealing with our technical and performing conditions, ie differently from the classic style with a set of instruments such as a string quartet, the 8 cellos from Bachianas No. 5 or a symphony orchestra and mixed choir of Choros No. 10, but with the clear intent of a valid artistic approach.
In his unflagging enthusiasm and prodigious open mind, Villa-Lobos (who, during his life and even after, so little public/official recognition received in Brazil) certainly would give us not only his blessing, but also his most fervent applause.
That’s how we understand and feel his music – trying to perform it in «a new way».
So we hope, respectfully bowed before the Brazilian genius. And, of course, with great eagerness to the interested public.
